The Miami Floridians Ballgirls (left) were talented, and they
were famous throughout the ABA. In fact, they were probably more
famous than the basketball team itself!
At the Miami Beach Convention Hall, the ballgirls took pictures
of fans before games, threw the ball out onto the floor to the
referees, danced during timeouts, and served refreshments at halftime. During
free throw attempts by opposing players, they were known to stand directly
underneath the basket as a distraction (far left). Occasionally,
they even traveled with the team.
The Floridians ballgirls served as the inspiration for the similarly-clad
"Flint Tropics Girls" seen in the Will Ferrell ABA movie "Semi-Pro."
